The label believe that there are many unsigned but yet talented and exciting artists in the UK. They believe that they could add to the already expanding scene and expose talent of the UK even more. With Jay, John and John having a keen interest in music and also good knowledge between them of 'Underground' artists and 'Mainstream' artists they were keen to start up the record label. Since the start of the label, MCF Records have signed a number of very exciting prospects throughout different genres such as Hip Hop, Punk, Grime and Indie. The Music Comes First Records owners like to class the label as a family.

THE VIDEO

Rapshackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08722682410824901471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783511346943341009.post-9185161567662133442010-10-28T06:42:00.000-07:002010-11-19T02:32:58.657-08:00~~~DJ MK Live DJ set~~~3rd December 2010 sees DJ MK (Roots Manuva's DJ, Kiss 100 & Extended Players), A.Gee and the Bounce Brothers spinning only the best in Hip Hop at The University Of Essex in a special 'WE GOT NEXT...' to celebrate the university's new venue.

Tickets are only £3 (N.U.S) and £5 (Non N.U.S) available from <a href="http://www.essexstudent.com/ents/event/2146/" target=_"blank">Essexstudent.com & <a href="www.rapshack.co.uk/hiphopevents.php" target=_blank">Rapshack.co.uk.
Rapshack 'Concentrate' Artist profile-Jehst.

Growing up in both the South East and North West of England, the self-styled High Plains Drifter has earned the respect of a loyal fan-base both sides of the North-South divide. After establishing the Young N Restless crew along with Fools I View (now Eighteen18) and school friends Passive Resistance (Nmonic, Taharka and Nexus 6) during his teenage years in Huddersfield, he re-located to London in 1998. He made his vinyl debut the following year with the highly acclaimed "Premonitions" EP, launching the self-financed YNR Productions label from his University halls of residence.

Jehst began collaborating with other artists on the label, contributing both production and guest vocals to subsequent releases from Nmonic, Tommy Evans and Evil Ed. His profile was further raised when he put in an appearance on Task Forces "Voice of the Great Outdoors" EP released on Low Life records in 2000, before dropping his second solo outing on the same label the following year. This four track EP, "The High Plains Drifter", delivered a range of musical moods and lyrical content.

He followed this up with a couple of Harry Love produced bangers; "Staircase 2 Stage" (Low Life) which teamed him up with NYC underground hero J-Zone, and the atmospheric "Alcoholic Author" (YNR) in 2002. Throughout this time Jehst was also a pivotal member of the legendary Champions Of Nature, the 7 man super-group who released 2 EP’s and the classic summer jam “Salsa Smurf” on their own C.O.N. Artists label before licensing “Salsa Smurf” to Wordplay/Source as the lead single from the “WordLab 2” compilation.

The crew officially disbanded, but restless as ever, Jehst switched his focus back to solo material, rounding off the year with the club smash "People Under The Weather"(feat. Asaviour) on Low Life, accompanied with a full length CD of his collected works "The Return Of The Drifter". With all of this under his belt, and contributions to now classic albums "Biro Funk" by Braintax (Low Life) and the long-awaited "It's All Happening Now" from Lewis Parker (Melankolic/Virgin), Jehst had established himself among the UK’s lyrical elite.

In 2003 he unveiled his debut album “Falling Down” (Low Life) which featured the smash singles “Run Hard” and “Monotony” (feat. Asaviour) as well as guest appearances from Klashnekoff, Lewis Parker, Usmaan and The Sundragon. A nationwide tour ensued with DJ IQ, Asaviour and Usmaan in tow, not to mention the mighty Terra Firma, accompanied by London’s DJ A-Cyde.

In 2004 Jehst established his East London based studio Arkham Asylum in partnership with long time collaborator, and one half of Sit Tight Records, DJ/producer LG. During its short history the studio opened its doors to everyone from Foreign Beggars to Ransom Badbones, and allowed LG and Jehst to churn out 5 (count ‘em!) classic albums; Micall Parknsun “The Working Class Dad” (Sit Tight), LG and Biscuit “Smoke Rings” (Sit Tight), Sir Smurf Lil’ “Myalpha” (YNR) and 2 albums from Jehst, “Nuke Proof Suit” (High Plains Music) and “Jehst presents…Underworld Epics Vol. 1” (Low Life).

Jehst released his next solo outing, “Nuke Proof Suit” in 2005. Despite its brevity, this 8 track milestone speaks volumes, not only about Jehst’s own lyrical persona but also the tense atmosphere of post 9/11 London.

In 2006 Jehst finally released his long overdue production project “Jehst presents…Underworld epics Vol. 1” which featured brand new bangers and exclusive remixes from the likes of Kyza, Micall Parknsun and Rodney P, all produced by the High Plains Drifter himself. His most recent production can be heard on Sir Smurf Lil’s “Myalpha” LP (YNR), for which, with the exception of contributions from LG and Apa-Tight, he supplied every beat!

With live performances as strong as his discography Jehst has torn-up shows all over the UK and abroad along side the likes of Non Phixion, Q-Bert, Atmosphere, J-Zone, Mr Lif, De La Soul, KRS One and even reggae legends Lee Scratch Perry & Max Romeo. With 2006’s “Mengi Bus Mixtape Tour” he continued to smash stages across the UK, once more proving why he is without a doubt one of the UK’s most prolific and powerful Hip Hop masterminds!

Peace.

Rapshack 'Concentrate' Artist profile-The Wu Tang Clan.

Emerging in 1993, the Staten Island, NY-based Wu-Tang Clan proved to be the most revolutionary rap group of the mid-'90s -
and only partially because of their music. Turning the standard concept of a hip-hop crew inside out, the Wu-Tang Clan
were assembled as a loose congregation of nine MCs. Instead of releasing one album after another, the Clan was designed to overtake the record industry. The idea was to establish the Wu-Tang as a force with their debut album and then spin off
into as many side projects as possible.

Surprisingly, the plan worked. All of the various Wu-Tang solo projects elaborated on the theme the group laid out on their
1993 debut, the spare, menacing Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Taking their group name from a powerful, mythical kung
fu sword wielded by an invincible congregation of warriors, the crew is a loose collective of nine MCs. All nine
members work under a number of pseudonyms. RZA (aka Prince Rakeem, aka Rzarecta, Chief Abbot, and Bobby Steels; born
Robert Diggs), GZA/Genius (aka Justice and Maxi Million; born Gary Grice), Ol' Dirty Bastard (aka Unique Ason, Joe Bannanas, Dirt McGirt, Dirt Dog, and Osirus; born Russell Jones), Method Man (aka Johnny Blaze, Ticallion Stallion, Shakwon,
and Methical; born Clifford Smith, Raekwon the Chef (aka Shallah Raekwon and Lou Diamonds; born Corey Woods), Ghostface Killah (aka Tony Starks and Sun God; born Dennis Coles), U-God (aka Golden Arms, Lucky Hands, Baby U, and 4-Bar
Killer; born Lamont Hawkins), Inspectah Deck (aka Rebel INS and Rollie Fingers; born Jason Hunter), and Masta Killa (aka Noodles; born Elgin Turner).

The vision of the Wu-Tang Clan is undoubtedly due to the musical skills of RZA. Under his direction, the group - through its
own efforts and the solo projects, all of which he produced or co-produced - created a hazy, surreal, and menacing soundscape out of hardcore beats, eerie piano riffs, and minimal samples. Over these surrealistic backing tracks, the MCs
rapped hard.. By 1995, the sound was one of the most instantly recognizable in hip-hop.

It wasn't always that way. Like most rappers, they began their careers trying to get ahead whatever way they could. For RZA,
that meant releasing a silly single, Ooh, I Love You Rakeem, on Tommy Boy Records in 1991. On the advice of his label and producers, he cut the humorous, lover-man single that went absolutely nowhere. Neither did the follow-up single, My Deadly
Venoms. The experience strengthened his resolve to subvert and attack record-industry conventions.

The first Wu-Tang Clan single, the hard-hitting Protect Ya Neck, appeared on their own independent label and became an
underground hit. Soon, the record labels were offering them lucrative contracts., the group held out until they landed a deal that would allow each member to record solo albums for whatever label they chose - in essence, each rapper was a free
agent. Loud/RCA agreed to the deal, and the band's debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), appeared in November of 1993. Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful; although its financial
success wasn't immediate, it was the result of a slow build. C.R.E.A.M., released in early 1994, was the single that put them over the top and won them a devoted following. The group wasted no time in pursuing other projects, as a total of five
of the members - Genius, RZA, Raekwon, Method Man, and Ol' Dirty Bastard - landed solo contracts as a result of the success of C.R.E.A.M. RZA was the first to re-enter the studio, this time as a member of the Gravediggaz, a group he founded;
in addition to Wu Tang Clan. The group included De La Soul producer Prince Paul, Stetsasonic's Frukwan, and Brothers Grimm's Poetic. The Gravediggaz's album 6 Feet Deep appeared in August 1994; it eventually went gold. Labeled
"horrorcore" by the group, it was an ultra-violent but comical tour de force that demonstrated RZA's production prowess. Shortly after its release, Raekwon released his first single, Heaven and Hell, on the Fresh soundtrack; the song was produced
by RZA and featured Ghostface Killah.

The first Wu-Tang member to become a major solo star was Method Man. In November 1994, he released Tical on Def Jam
Recordings, the first official Wu-Tang solo album. Again, RZA produced the album, creating a dense, dirty sonic collage.
Tical became a big hit in early 1995, as did Meth's duet with Mary J. Blige, I'll Be There for You/You're All I
Need to Get By. Ol' Dirty Bastard followed Method Man's breakthrough success with Return to the 36 Chambers, which appeared in March 1995 on Elektra Records. Thanks to the hits "Brooklyn Zoo" and "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," the record became a gold
success. Out of all the solo albums, it was the one that sounded the most like Enter the Wu-Tang, although it did have a more pronounced comic bent, due to Ol' Dirty's maniacal vocals. Tales From the Hood, a movie soundtrack featuring Inspectah
Deck's first solo track, appeared in May.

Later in 1995, the two most critically acclaimed Wu-Tang records appeared: Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and Genius/GZA's
Liquid Swords. Raekwon released his album on Loud/RCA in August 1995; the record featured extensive contributions - a total of 12 songs - from Ghostface Killah, his greatest exposure yet. Genius' second solo album was
released by Geffen Records in November 1995. In February of 1996, Ghostface Killah's first solo track, Winter Warz, appeared on the ‘Don't Be a Menace to South Central While You're Drinking Your Juice in the Hood’ soundtrack. Later that
October, he released his own solo debut, the critically acclaimed, '70s soul-flavored Ironman; the record was the first released on RZA's new Epic subsidiary, Razor Sharp Records….

-Quotes taken from Wu Tang.com

<a href="http://www.rapshack.co.uk" target=_"top">Rapshack.co.uk

<a href="http://www.myspace.com/rapshack_co_uk" target=_"top">Rapshack on Myspace

<a href="http://rapshack.blogspot.com" target=_"top">Blogspot

<a href="http://www.twitter.com/rapshack_co_uk" target=_"top"> follow us on TwitterRapshackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08722682410824901471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783511346943341009.post-76719554260400352182010-05-01T05:08:00.000-07:002010-05-01T05:13:41.388-07:00May Mayhem>>>50% off ALL CDs & Mixtapes<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 291px; height: 217px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglSvBGP7yjoXBi_8SYXH_EGgt8spIKIOup4xh0DEPxTgA5qRVRgc0SNB3sgrqwH4h2ow65c4HiIh9pbFWRp8DXucjcXX6DeqHJiUSqmsThzXH1DF6nnLKZ1xaf90A_5mYsRVodlQFqv58/s320/banner6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466272765908685618" />Rapshackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08722682410824901471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783511346943341009.post-22890778953262595792010-04-21T11:31:00.000-07:002010-04-23T00:44:58.107-07:00Guru-July 17, 1966–April 19, 2010-April 19, 2010. Honour the works of the late rapper.This brief blog, is to celebrate the life and works of the rapper Guru (born Keith Elam, July 17, 1966. Died, April 19, 2010).

A personal favourite of every one here at Rapshack.co.uk we would lke to celebrate the works and times of Guru. With all the conspiracy surrounding his illness and the reasons for his time in hospital months before his death, we feel that there is enough mention on this and not enough focus on Guru, as we all knew and loved him to be; A dope rapper and purveyor of the modern Jazz movement and Jazz/Hip Hop fusion.

What continues in this piece is a little information on his background and some embedded videos of his work, both with DJ Premier, known as Gangstarr and his work with legendary Jazz greats such as, Donald Byrd, Bernard Purdie, Courtney Pine and many others in his projects known as the Jazzmatazz Volumes.

Born Keith Elam in the Roxbury section of Boston on July 17, 1962, he began his career in the mid-1980s as MC Keithy E, but soon switched to Guru (which he later turned into an acronym, for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal).

Guru’s father, Harry Elam, was the first black judge in the Boston municipal courts, and his mother, Barbara, was the co-director of library programs in the Boston public school system. Before beginning his rap career, Guru graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1983 and took graduate classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After which he briefly worked as a social worker.

In 1988, after an early version of Gang Starr, Guru, Big Shug, DJ 1,2 B-Down (also known as Mike Dee) splintered, Guru met DJ Premier — Christopher Martin, a young DJ/Producer from Houston, whom like Guru had flown the nest to find Hip Hop sanctuary in Brooklyn. They formed a partnership that would lead to six influential and critically acclaimed albums, two of which, “Moment of Truth” and the hits collection “Full Clip,” were certified gold.

After making the six full length Hip Hop albums, Guru wanted to embrace his love for Jazz, and in particular the live Jazz band. He and DJ Premier departed for reasons to grow their on their own solos projects, DJ Premier producing tracks for other artists and Guru pursuing his Jazz fix. A permanent split was never meant to be executed.

Guru went on to make 4 of these projects in terms of 4 volumes of the Jazzmatazz series, full length albums and world tours with full band line ups.

Please take a look at the videos below, the first of which is taken from Gangstarr's second album, 'Step In The Arena'. A Hip Hop classic in it's own right, you can still hear tracks taken from this album being played in clubs all over the word and they still sound dope and fresh as the day they were written.

The second video is of Guru and his Jazzmatazz live band performing a concert in France. With the live band Guru could express himself perhaps a little more indepth than he could with a DJ.

Thank you for reading this blog and we hope that, like us you will help celebrate his life and appreciate what Guru did for us and that was to provide us with dope, hard hitting Hip Hop.

Rest In Power. He had been suffering from cancer. He was one of the most notorious persuaders in rock's history and self-proclaimed inventor of punk.

Malcolm Mclaren's influence in music and fashion covers a vast spectrum of genres from the Punk anarchist ploits of The sex Pistols, managing them in the late 70's/early 80s. To the Break Dancing Scratch DJ in the '80s and bringing the art of the Scratch DJ to the UK after witnessing it in New York, U.S.A.

It was with this latter scene that first attracted many a young fan in the UK and around the world to Hip Hop, Breaking and Scratching. His Album, 'Duck Rock' (1983) has been one of the most sampled records in Hip Hop and Scratch DJ history. It was probably one of the first recorded pieces of work which sampled voices, noises and scratches to make a record. Even the cover, with the crazy stereo with the extended aerials and bull horns has been copied and mimicked. This can be seen on the Stones Throw Scratch/DJ Tool, 'Super Duper Duck Breaks'.

DJ Q Bert's now infamous "All That Scratching's Making Me Itch" scratch routine c.1997, used just those words, the sample taken from the album. It can be seen on the Technics DMC video, 'The Summit'.

R.I.P Maclom Mclaren.

Please take a look at the videos below and firstly see the Malcom Mclaren video for 'Buffolo Gals'. On this record you will hear the sample used by DJ Q Bert in the second video.

<a href="http://www.rapshack.co.uk" target=_"blank">Rapshack.co.uk
<a href="http://www.myspace.com/rapshackuk" target=_"blank">Myspace.com/rapshackuk
<a href="http://www.twitter.com/rapshack_co_uk" target=_"blank">Twitter.com/rapshack_co_ukRapshackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08722682410824901471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783511346943341009.post-21489266204715127762010-04-08T11:54:00.000-07:002010-04-09T03:04:51.917-07:00
Concentrate. label profile-Tru Thoughts

Rapshack 'Concentrate' Label profile-Tru Thoughts

Interview with Robert Luis, Label Boss

OK, let’s start with the obvious question – why is the label called Tru Thoughts?

I knew I wanted to have ‘Thoughts’ as part of the label name and just before I needed a name to release our first tune I saw Pete Rock’s ‘Tru Master’ 12” and that was it. It was also a name that fitted with the way I had decided I want to run a record label with putting priority on music and making the business work around the music (rather than the other way round).
What is your musical background?

I wanted to learn how to play the drums from about the age of 8 but we lived in a flat and my Mum couldn’t afford lessons let alone drums. To be honest I’m not sure I’d have been that good anyway but I think that led me to getting really into hip hop in the 80’s…Run DMC ‘Sucker MC’s’ changed my life! I was a massive hip hop fan and when a mate told me to check early Gilles Peterson and Norman Jay radio shows for the original samples it opened my mind musically to a lot of other music.
What do you look for in the music you choose to release on Tru Thoughts? (other artist’s music, not yours!)

Originality, soul, creativity, trying to push music forward and good hooks!
What have you learned from running a record label?

It’s hard work but fulfilling. The old saying that the music business is 99% business 1%music can sometimes be frustrating but I can deal with it now. I think at Tru Thoughts we’ve changed those percentages a bit too.
What is the state of independents nowadays?

I think we are in a good position compared to the majors. The feedback I get is people are happy to buy our records and download the majors as more people have an understanding that supporting independent artists means you are helping them pay the rent and make more music rather than buy jewellery or other “successories”. We are also able to be a bit more creative. We can release an album that sells 3000 copies and not lose any money. A major needs to probably sell 50,000 plus just to break even.
What are your long term aims for the label?

At the moment I think we have gone passed the first stage of being an indie and people now know the label and what we are about and check our music. I hope we can continue to win more fans for the artists on Tru Thoughts and ideally I would like the label to be able to continue signing and developing new artists and establishing artists.
