Rapshack 'Concentrate' Artist profile-MF Doom.

MF Doom or simply Doom, has appeared in several collaborative projects such as Danger Doom (with Danger Mouse) and Madvillain

(with Madlib), but it was his first group, KMD that he formed with his brother, Subroc and another MC, Onyx the Birthstone

Kid.. They were signed to Elektra Records after their A+R man learned of them through 3rd Bass.

It was on 3rd Bass' album "The Cactus Album" that they had there recorded debut featuring on a song called "Gas Face". In

1991 their debut album, "Mr Hood" was released and got alot of video play on Yo! MTV Raps, MTV show.

Two years later in 1993 subroc was struck down by a car and wass killed just before the release of their second album, "Black

Bastards". The Album was shelved due to it's cover art, a cartoon of a stereotypical pickaninny or sambo character being

hanged from the gallows.

With the loss of his brother, Doom retreated from the hip-hop scene from 1994 to 1997. He testifies to disillusionment and

depression, living "damn near homeless, walking the streets of Manhattan, sleeping on benches."[1][3] In the late 1990s, he

left New York City and settled in Atlanta. According to interviews with Doom, he was also "recovering from his wounds" and

swearing revenge "against the industry that so badly deformed him."[1] Black Bastards had become bootlegged at the time,

leading to Doom's rise in the underground hip-hop world.

A year later in In 1998, Doom began freestyling incognito at open-mic events at the Nuyorican Poets Café in Manhattan,

obscuring his face by putting a stocking over his head. He meanwhile had taken on a new identity, MF Doom, (Inspired by his

good friend MF Grimm) patterned after and wearing a mask similar to that of Marvel Comics supervillain Doctor Doom. He wears

this mask while performing and isn't photographed without it.

British rapper Derek B dies at 44

British rapper Derek B, one of the first UK hip-hop stars to enjoy chart success and an influence on future urban artists, has died aged 44. According to reports Derek Boland, a.k.a Derek B suffered a heart attack.

He started his musical career DJing in a mobile unit around London, before joining local pirate radio stations such as Kiss FM and LWR and finally starting his own station, WBLS (not to be confused with the radio station of the same name in New York).

He joined Simon Harris' Music of Life as the closest thing they had to an A&R man. Boland stepped in to record a track called "Rock the Beat" he co-produced the track with Simon Harris, when a planned compilation of U.S. hip hop called Def Beats 1 (Music of Life, 1986) ran short of tracks. Simon Harris also rapped on it under the pseudonym EZQ and also did his own DJing under the Derek B name.

Derek B also had UK top 20 hits with “Good Groove” and “Bad Young Brother” in 1988 and co-wrote the “Anfield Rap” for Liverpool Football Club and a recorded an album called “Bullet From a Gun”. His hits saw him become one of the first British hip-hop stars to appear on programmes like Top of the Pops, yet he received criticism for rapping under an assumed American accent, something which was popular in the early days of British Hip Hop.

"He was one of the first artists that I saw get to such a level through rap, and be on Top of the Pops, be on children's programmes, be on the world stage.

"He was one of the ones to do it first, when it was thoroughly unacceptable from the mainstream perspective. At the time, he was absolutely groundbreaking. He definitely broke the door down." London rapper Ty.
